Earn a Certificate in Advocacy from The Nation Urban League's Washington Bureau

Deadline: March 16th, 2018

The Certificate in Advocacy is available to Young Professional Members who have a serious interest in expanding their knowledge of congressional advocacy and its application within the Urban League Movement. The recipient of the Certificate in Advocacy will have participated in advocacy webinars and training, utilized the Advocacy Guide and applied what they have learned by meeting with Members of Congress or their staff. The Certificate is an acknowledgment by the National Urban League Washington Bureau (NULWB) that the recipient has successfully completed the required training selections on advocacy and has met the required 20 credits. Upon completion, the recipient will receive the Certificate, as well as a paid registration to attend the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 48th Annual Legislative Conference in September 2018.

Credit Opportunities (All to be completed in 2018)

 Participate in 2 NULWB Hosted Advocacy Webinars (2 Credits Each/ Maximum: 4 Credits)

 Act on a minimum of 4 advocacy action alerts & share with personal/professional network (1 Credit Each/ Maximum: 4 Credits) o Actions are defined as: Calling or writing your Member of Congress to urge support for legislative issues as distributed by NULWB

 Attend the 15th Annual Legislative Policy Conference in Washington, DC (5 Credits)

 Host an Advocacy Session during a Guild or YP Member Meeting (Train Membership on tools learned during a Webinar or in the Advocacy Guide) - (4 Credits)

 August Recess Advocacy (4 Credits): o Convene an in-district meeting with a Member of Congress or attend Member Event, such as:

 Congressman or Senator visit to Urban League Office for Tour/Meeting;

 Congressman or Senator Coffee/Town hall meeting  Washington, DC visit to Capitol Hill and meeting with Congressional Office (4 Credits)

 Conduct a YP or Guild “Call to Action” on a specific policy issue (4 Credits) o Must include: Letter writing campaign or Phone Banking to a Member of Congress’ office o Minimum actions taken: 100

Participation Requirements

 Applicants should be highly motivated individuals who are interested in growing their skills in congressional advocacy and grassroots mobilization, particularly as part of a civil rights organization. Applicants should be prepared to allot time to in-person and virtual training and engagement opportunities.

 Must be a current Guild or Young Professional Member

 Must submit a 300-word statement describing why you want to participate and what you hope to gain by obtaining the Certificate in Advocacy to Latricia Boone, Director of Congressional Advocacy (LBoone@nul.org) by no later than March 16, 2018.

Background about the National Urban League

The National Urban League (NUL), a historic civil rights and urban advocacy organization dedicated to economic empowerment in underserved urban communities, is proud of its long and successful history of policy advocacy on issues that impact urban America.

Building a direct relationship with the federal government and ensuring that the Urban League plays an active role to educate lawmakers and other stakeholders on the challenges and opportunities facing urban communities, the National Urban League Washington Bureau (NULWB) works in conjunction with the League’s national office and Urban League affiliates to achieve social and economic equality for African Americans. Through policy advocacy outreach and communications, the NULWB keeps the Urban League Movement informed on the status of key legislation and calls upon both our national and affiliate offices to take advocacy actions during key stages of the legislative process.

As we continue to expand our movement, the NULWB is developing tools and resources to support members (NUL Affiliates, Young Professionals, Guilders, partners and community leaders) who are actively participating in the process to help shape and influence public policy at both federal and state levels. As outlined in the Main Street Marshall plan, NUL’s policy priorities champion solutions that seek to advance economic and social equality in crucial areas such as education, workforce development/jobs, housing and economic development, health and quality of life.
